'Star Wars' Celebration V Report: The George Lucas-Jon Stewart Main Event!

Starting in the middle of last week and continuing on through the weekend, fans of a galaxy far, far away descended on Orlanda, Florida for "Star Wars" Celebration V. A lot of crazy happenings went down, from "Star Wars"-inspired speed dating to the (temporary) closing of Disney's "Star Tours" ride to the long-awaited announcement of a "Star Wars" Blu-ray release. MTV's Laurel Woods braved Florida's brutal August heat/humidity to bring back reports straight from the show floor. Here we have Laurel's impressions from the show's so-called Main Event, a one-on-one conversation between George Lucas and Jon Stewart.

The Force was strong with me this past weekend, as I was able to score a press pass to the Main Event at "Star Wars" Celebration V in Orlando, Florida. My head is still buzzing from all the excitement. The live event took place at 11am Saturday morning in the Chapin Theater at the Orange County Convention Center. The space seats just 2600 people, in comparison to the approximately 35,000 in attendance at Celebration.

People started waiting outside in line on Friday night at 11pm hoping to get one of the coveted wristbands for entry. The Main Event was also simulcast in several smaller theaters, accommodating a total of 8000 guests.

Inside the theater, the crowd was waving around light sabers, dressed in costumes and taking photos as a DJ played live music on the stage - a true celebration indeed. The lights went down at 11am sharp, and a group of stormtroopers came onto the stage. The main stormtrooper, Celebration host Jay Laga’aia (Captain Typho from the prequels), took off his helmet and introduced Jon Stewart.

The crowd clapped and cheered as Stewart greeted everyone and quickly quieted them down. He immediately introduced George Lucas, who came out on stage waving to the audience. The crowd went nuts as Lucas walked out to a standing ovation, people screaming “I love you George” across the theater.

They both sat down and Stewart sarcastically thanked Lucas for having the Celebration during the hottest month of the summer in Orlando, Florida. He then jumped right into asking Lucas questions from his fans.

“What it’s like coming here and seeing all the full-size droids on the Celebration floor?”

“It’s a tragedy, it took us eight years to get the R2-D2 unit working with the leg in front.”

“Here’s a question from Chadmiral Ackbar - How do you get all the names, like R2, Tatooine, Ewok, etc?”

George said he hates writing so he spends from 5:45-6pm writing and the rest of the day he comes up with names and writes them down in his names book. He said the name Ewok came from the Miwok Indian Territory that spread across the coast of Northern California.

Stewart then asked Lucas what goes through his mind when he decides to start production on another movie. “It helps to be nuts,” George replied as the crowd laughed. When asked what his favorite piece of Star Wars memorabilia was that was given to him he said “I once got a little me carbon freezing,” a reference to the "Empire Strikes Back" scene in which a captured Han Solo is frozen in carbonite.

“Ten-year-old Lucas from California wants to be a director, and wants to know any advice you have for him.”

“Do well in school, go to college, go to film school, study hard and be mindlessly persistent. You are a small fish swimming upstream,” George answered.

Stewart said that everyone knows where all the characters are from except Obi-Wan. “Where’s he from?”

George paused and looked up and the ceiling. “Don’t make it up!” Stewart yelled.

“He comes from a planet named Stewjon.” Stewart almost fell out of his chair as the audience roared with laughter.

About ten minutes before the end of the interview, Stewart asked Lucas if he had something big to share with the crowd. “Blu-ray” is all Lucas said as the audience screamed and clapped loudly. “I wish it was coming out this year, but it’s coming out next year.” Lucas said there will be a lot more additional material that’s really good, including deleted scenes that have never been seen before.

Just then, Mark Hamill -- Luke Skywalker himself -- came out onstage and introduced one of the deleted scenes, Luke’s original first appearance in "Return of the Jedi." The crowd roared and as if it couldn’t get any better... but then it did.

Carrie Fisher came out on stage and hugged George and Mark. Stewart asked both Fisher and Hamill if they ever thought "Star Wars" would be so big. Hamill said yes and that he forgets how much the passion still exists, calling the fans UPFs: Ultra Passionate Fans. Fisher then asked Lucas if he put the nude scenes back in the Blu-ray edition, joking that the Jabba porn scenes were what made her get into drugs.

At the very end of the event, George stood up and told the audience, “The most important thing is that none of us would be here if it wasn’t for you. It’s great to be appreciated.” Then Lucas, Hamill and Fisher took off into hyperspace behind the stage as the lights when up and the "Star Wars" theme played.
