Vanessa Hudgens Still Holds Out Hope For Leah Clearwater In 'New Moon'

"It's still a rumor; I'm really interested," she told "Extra." "I think it's a great project, but nothing's happening as of now."

Perhaps "nothing's happening" because earlier this month, Melissa Rosenberg, who wrote both films, told People that we won't be seeing Leah until the third movie, "Eclipse," set for 2010. "I'm not sure about [final] casting, but I had heard Vanessa Hudgens was going up for the part of Leah," Rosenberg said. "But at the moment, the part of Leah doesn't happen until the third movie."

Hudgens told "Extra" that she's a fan of the book series (where Leah does, in fact appear in the second book). "Yes, love it," she said. "My sister has read all of the books too."

Rumors began swirling that Hudgens had auditioned for the role last month, when MTV News caught up with "Twilight" star Ashley Greene, who said she thought Hudgens could be a good fit for Leah. "I think she'd be great," Greene said.

Earlier this week, Greene told "Extra" that she finally got to read the script for "New Moon" and shared that she thinks it's better than "Twilight." She didn't say whether or not Leah would end up making an appearance in the film.

"I'm so excited. I finally, finally got the script ... and it's good. It's really good," the 22-year-old said. "I'm really excited to work with [new director] Chris [Weitz]. I finally spoke to him the other day. I like [the script] better than the first one. I might be biased, because I have a bigger part."
