Cronenberg's Aborted Job Offer: 'Star Wars: Return of the Jedi' Director's Chair?

"There was a time when I was asked to do the third 'Star Wars' movie. It was at least inquired," Cronenberg told our very own Kurt Loder last week while making the rounds for his new film, "Eastern Promises." "Then it was called 'Revenge of the Jedi.'"

Can you imagine what some of those creatures in Jabba's Palace would have looked like with Cronenberg behind the lens? We'll never know, of course, but to hear Cronenberg tell it, his participation never really got that far anyway. Actually, it was kind of dead from the very beginning.

"I got a phone call. I was in my kitchen and it was one of the producers. He said, 'What would you think of doing 'Star Wars'?" Cronenberg explained. "I said, 'Well, I don't usually do other people's material.' And then there was a kind of click. I wasn't enthusiastic enough obviously. I didn't get a chance to think about whether it was a good idea or not. I blew it right away.'" (See Cronenberg describe the story in the video after the jump).

Bummed out David passed on the project, or happy that he made "The Dead Zone" instead? And what would his version of "Jedi" looked like? Sound off below.
