'Savage' Advice In Action: Embrace Your Awkwardness

MTV’s newest resident sex and relationship guru Dan Savage is trekking across the country to enlighten America's coeds and help them better understand the sexual culture that exists today. But what happens once Dan offers his pearls of wisdom to the eager undergrad? We usually don't get to see the students put his advice into practice, but luckily our own MTV family members can show us all how it's done. This week's advice in action: Embrace your awkwardness.

In the premiere episode of "Savage U," Dan and his bubbly producer Lauren kicked off their college tour with a trip to the University of Maryland, and the pair wasted no time injecting themselves into the modern college experience. Along their travels they hit up a pregame hosted by a couple of competitive buddies, where they learned about the hookup point system on campus. Later, at a local bar, Dan found out more about the undergrad dating scene and got an inspiring vocabulary lesson from Lauren in the men's bathroom. But the talk turned more serious when he encountered Marty, a student who'd been having a tough time figuring out his place within the school's sexual culture.

Marty opened up to Dan about his bisexuality and shared a personal story about public embarrassment. In response, Dan encouraged him to embrace rejection and lead with his strengths when it comes to attracting possible mates. Have a listen to their chat:

We're keeping our fingers crossed that Marty takes Dan's advice moving forward and finds himself a cute guy who loves the "Eastern European look," but since we can't be there when it happens, let's shift our focus to someone who's--knowingly or not--taken Savage's words to heart: Jenna Hamilton of MTV's "Awkward."

Throughout Season 1, the neurotic teen had plenty of reasons to suppress her freak flag: She was THAT GIRL who tried to commit suicide (even though we know better) and she was THAT GIRL whose lady parts were exposed to the entire school via bully Sadie Saxton. Not even a fling, albeit a secret one, with the student body's No. 1 catch provided J-Bone with enough social capital to be free of her classmates' judgment. Yet, by the finale, Jenna had built up the confidence to finally say "So what?" This epiphany came at the Palos Hills Winter Formal, and we think the subsequent dance montage below is the best way to sum up Jenna's finally embracing--and owning--her awkwardness.

There is nothing simpler--or more terrifying, in our opinion--than just being yourself. But if you can't appreciate the things you have to offer, how are others supposed to? Jenna might be clumsy and--for lack of a better word--awkward, but she was able to step out as her true self once she came to terms with her quirks. Hopefully, Marty can embrace his identity as a bigger guy with a hairy chest because, as Dan sees it, once he accepts these assets as strengths, he'll find a new self-confidence that is universally attractive.

+ Tune in for an all-new episode of "Savage U" tonight at 11/10c.
