True Life Check-In: Chad's Never Going Back To Skatopia

Today's "True Life" explored the stories of people who attended the insanely wild festival, Skatopia. They all went for different reasons, and we recently had the opportunity to check in with Kristin, Booth and Chad to find out if they'd ever go back--take a look at the follow-up Q&As below:

KRISTIN

What are you up to now?

I am living the dream. I recently got a new position managing a local skate park, which I am super excited about. I'm also the co-director of Skate Like a Girl Seattle, and we've run numerous new programs this year, which have been exciting to be a part of.

Have you stayed in touch with Brewce? Do you plan to return to Skatopia this summer?

Brewce left me some flattering voice mails after I left, but I didn't respond. I hope he is doing well and skating more, though. Despite his wild reputation and antics, he has done a lot for skateboarding, which I respect. Perhaps I'll reconnect with him soon, but I don't plan on going back to Skatopia any time in the immediate future.

What was it like to share your story with us?

It's a trip to have cameras on you all the time; it was definitely an experience of a lifetime and it's cool to know that it's documented. I hope folks will see it and be inspired in one way or another.

BOOTH

What are you up to now? Are you still in college?

After the cameras left, I moved back in with my mom but didn't really do much of anything. I wasted my fall '10 semester--the third straight semester I've wasted. Shortly after, I had a bit of a spiritual awakening and returned to Wilkes Community College. I'm doing quite well.

I'm also starting on my own musical venture, playing acoustic music with a folk/punk/bluegrass twist. I hope to record an album soon.

How is everything going with your band?

We didn't play too many shows after Skatopia, but that's typically how it goes during the fall/winter seasons. We suffered a bit of a setback when our bassist moved to Georgia, but he's back and we are playing semi-regular shows. We played two this month and already have a couple booked for the future.

Do you plan to return to Skatopia any time soon?

We are currently planning to travel back to Skatopia for this year's Bowl Bash. We are facing the same problems as during the documentary, mainly poverty. However, we think we've already found a van to use and we are not giving up hope until the day before we have to leave.

What was it like to share your story with us?

Overall, it was a very interesting experience. I do admit that I'm looking forward to visiting Skatopia again without cameras, but that didn't take away from the experience whatsoever.

CHAD

What are you up to now? Have you given up skateboarding professionally? Will you be going to college?

I'm working full time and going to school for business. I've just been hanging out, skating and enjoying myself.

Are you and Allison still engaged? If so, how is the wedding planning process going?

I just got back from New York with my amazing girl and we plan on getting married next year. The wedding planning is crazy. I want it my way and she wants it hers!

Now that you've gotten some distance from Skatopia, do you see it in a different way? Has time given you perspective on the scene there? Do you think you'd ever go back?

I still skate and it's one of my loves but I'm not doing it for the money anymore. Skatopia is crazy. It's a weird world that I never want to land on again. Going there and saying you have been there is just amazing and something I will have forever.

What was it like to share your story with us?

Even though I let the world watch me look like a scared little boy (because that place was nuts), it was still one of the best times of my life and something that I can tell my kids and grandkids about.
