When the first "Jem and the Holograms" trailer hit the internet, fans of the fantastical '80s cartoon lost their chill. Where were The Misfits? And most importantly, where was Synergy? Things, for the most part, got ugly, with hardcore "Jem" fans denouncing the new film before even giving it a shot. (Way harsh, Tai.)

But according to "Jem and the Holograms" star Hayley Kiyoko, the magic is still there -- you'll just have to wait and see with your own eyes. You didn't think "Jem" was going to give it all away in the trailer, did you?

"Listen, I was upset when 'The Hunger Games' came out," Kiyoko told MTV News. "It doesn't matter what you do, there's always going to be opinions. For me, I think 'Jem' fans were expecting a remake of the cartoon, and the movie really is inspired by the cartoon based in a 2015, modern-day setting. It is going to be very different, but it's also going to be very familiar as well."

In fact, the film doesn't totally ignore some of the hallmarks of the show, like The Misfits or Jerrica's computer, Synergy. Their origins are just slightly different. For example, Synergy is now a cute lil' droid, and of course, there's a nod to Jerrica's beloved earrings.

"I would just say that everyone can calm down," the 24-year-old said. "I think they'll enjoy it once they see it and they realize that the Jem they love is still there and her message is still the same."

In other words, this is a total #girlpower movie. "Jem" fans will also be happy to know that when it comes to the iconic ~aesthetic~ of "Jem and the Holograms," the movie completely nails it, with more face plaint, pink leather, colorful mermaid hair and glitter than you could ever imagine would exist outside of Kesha's closet.

"Everything was custom-made," Kiyoko said. "My jacket was made from scratch. It was amazing. We were always in the hair and makeup trailer for at least two hours. There was a lot of hair and makeup, which was so fun because there was so many different costume changes and looks."

"We had so much glitter on at any given time," she added. "It was like a glitter festival. For six months, I would just find glitter throughout my apartment, and I don't really have a lot of glitter, so I seriously looked in to getting a glitter exterminator."

Glitter bombs -- of which there were many on set -- aside, for Kiyoko, "Jem and the Holograms" was actually a case of art imitating life. The former Disney star plays Jerrica's best friend -- and fierce bassist and drummer -- Aja in the film, and like her onscreen counterpart, she's been making music, and finding her voice in Hollywood, on her own for years now. She most recently released her "This Side Of Paradise" EP and surprisingly, it was "Jem" who helped her find her own voice in the industry.

"It's very close to what I'm going through right now. As an artist, I've always been confident, but I've experienced self-doubt, like, 'This girl is so pretty, and they're doing this that way,'" she said. "But you need to create your own path, and if you believe in something, more than anyone else, then other people will follow. That's something that's I've really learned through building my self-confidence, whether it's through acting roles or music."

"I need to be creating my own path as opposed to being distracted by everything else," she added. Because you can get sucked into that LA world, where everyone is doing all of these different things and they have support here and there -- there's so many highs and lows. It's a real hustle. It's not a glamorous thing right now. I'm hustling, but I love it."
