Here’s Why These Moms Released The Video Of Their Sons’ Deadly DUI Accident

'I'm hoping it will have an impact on young people,' one of the moms said.

Kyle Careford and Michael Owen went on a drug-fueled joy ride in April. The 20- and 21-year-old English men filmed their high-speed trip, right up until the moment when Careford lost control of the vehicle and crashed it, killing both men.

Now, their mothers have posted the clip online as a kind of cautionary tale about the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs in the hope of saving some lives.

"We bring our children up teaching them right from wrong. We guide them and give them our advice and hope they listen but, once they are adults, we hope they make the right choices. I really don't know why the boys chose to do what they did, but I blame them both for the decisions they made on this night," Kat Owen told Kent Online after the release of the inquest into the friends' death last week came out. "If all this stops one person from making the same mistake, then some good has come from showing this video."

Officials determined that a mix of prescription and illegal drugs had severely affected Careford's ability to control the car, leading to the crash.

"I'm hoping it will have an impact on young people and make them see that a bit of fun can have such devastating consequences," Kat Owen added of the two-minute video. The clip shows the men speeding along country roads in Sussex, England, before Careford -- who did not have a valid driver's license and was not insured to drive the car owned by Owen -- lost control and crashed into a church, killing both instantly.

"I would like all the young people out there to take notice and realize that you are not invincible and take seriously how precious your lives are to yourselves and others," Owen said. "Watching the video was very upsetting, but I'm hoping it can be used in a positive way, by showing young people what could happen to them."
