Planned Parenthood Is Getting A Series Of Fortunate Checks From Lemony Snicket

A powerful move from Daniel Handler and Lisa Brown as 'Americans and human beings.'

As the hearings on whether Planned Parenthood will be defunded continued on Tuesday (Sept. 29), countless supporters turned their profile pictures pink to send a little extra love to the group to celebrate "Pink Out Day." Author Daniel Handler (more often known as Lemony Snicket, creator of "A Series Of Unfortunate Events") and illustrator Lisa Brown took it a step further -- by pledging to donate $1 million to the organization.

Handler and Brown, who are married, announced they'd be donating the money Tuesday morning and told Mother Jones why they made the decision: "We're Americans and human beings. We believe in people making their own reproductive choices. Planned Parenthood has been essential in the lives of many, many people around us."

With all the recent attacks on the health care provider, Brown and Handler also said that they felt their donation was needed now more than ever.

"We've been enthusiastic supporters of Planned Parenthood for a long time, and watching their recent deceitful pummeling was frankly more than we could take," they told Mother Jones.

Planned Parenthood provides services to roughly 5.1 million men and women each year with total expenses of about $1,176,300,000 spent on STI/STD testing and treatment, cancer screening and prevention, contraception, abortion services, education and research initiatives, among other services.
