Emma Watson has never shied away from speaking the truth about Hollywood's "woman problem" -- and when it comes to illustrating the pernicious effects of sexism, she says, the numbers don't lie.

"I have experienced sexism in that I have been directed by male directors 17 times and only twice by women. Of the producers I’ve worked with 13 have been male and only one has been a woman," Watson said, in a new interview with the Guardian that included testimonials from actresses, designers, directors, and other women in film about how they're treated in Hollywood.

Where some of the other, older women interviewed talk about bald-faced sexism -- actors who simply refused to work with a female director, or male underlings who balked at being told what to do by a girl boss -- Emma's examples speak to the way the issue now presents itself in more subtle ways.

Even at the UN, where the actress launched the He for She campaign last year to great success, she's noticed a certain lack of representation at work (also known as "the sausage party effect.")

"I think my work with the UN has probably made me even more aware of the problems," she said. "I went out for a work dinner recently. It was 7 men… and me."

In addition to doing the math that highlights the dearth of women filmmakers in positions of power, Emma also was frank about the fact that women themselves are often "just as guilty" of acting as biased gatekeepers standing in the way of progress.

But the flipside of that sad fact was encouraging -- especially in light of where she's been focusing her efforts lately.

Said Emma, "Some of the best feminists I have encountered are men," citing directors Steven Chbosky and James Ponsoldt as examples.

In other words, never underestimate the power of reaching across the aisle and recruiting a few good guys to join the fight for gender equality.
