In the anthemic chorus of Halsey’s single “New Americana,” she shouts out two of her most prominent musical influences with the line, “raised on Biggie and Nirvana.”

It’s a catchy shoutout that packs quite the nostalgic punch, but what you may have missed (if you’re not familiar with Notorious B.I.G.’s catalog, at least) is that she takes the reference one step further in the song’s hook. “We know very well who we are/ So we hold it down when summer starts,” she sings, copying the melody and lyrical structure of Biggie’s 1994 classic “Juicy” (“You know very well who you are/ Don’t let ‘em hold you down, reach for the stars”).

So it’s only appropriate that when Halsey hit up the MTV studios to perform a cover song of her choosing, she opted to show us just how deeply she loves “Juicy.” And even with the illuminating, pastel-tinged light washing over her, you'll see: it's not all just a dream.

With a casual vibe and a minimalist production, the Badlands singer nails Biggie’s verses while replacing the song’s original hook with her “Juicy”-sampling bridge from “New Americana.” The result is a genre-bending cover that proves why Halsey’s truly an Artist to Watch.
