This Sorority Is Officially Accepting Trans Women

This is what true sisterhood looks like.

When sororities make national headlines, oftentimes, it's unfortunately for things that are less-than-great. However, the Missouri State University chapter of Xi Omicron Iota is getting lots of love for exhibiting just that -- love.

According to the Springfield News-Leader after Xi Omicron Iota member Kara Venzian suggested that the sorority change its policy in order to accept anyone who "identifies as a girl," the 75 sisters took a vote and it passed unanimously. Previously, the group's bylaws stated members had to "be a girl" to join.

"Transgender equality is a hot topic right now and it's something everyone is paying attention to," Danielle Marquard, the sorority's president, said. "We have a lot of open and welcoming women in the chapter."

Though none of the members knew if a trans woman had tried to rush in the past, the change is "effective immediately."

"We just want to be as inclusive as possible to all women on the Missouri State campus," Liz Lersch, the chapter's vice president, said.
