I think it's fair to assume that when Lana Del Rey sang about "Summertime Sadness," she was speaking for all of us -- that is, the end of the summer is sad as all hell. It means that it's time to go back to school, back to being ~ responsible ~, back to wearing pants at all most hours of the day/night.

Thankfully, John Oliver dropped an informative, (kind of) uplifting message to pull us all out of the back-to-school doldrums. It's a great refresher for all the things you've forgotten about over the past few months (e.g. math, biology, history) or deliberately chosen to actively repress.
