5 Reasons 'Awkward''s Jenna Hamilton Has Been The Popular-Kid Prototype All Along

Her peers have just begun to see her as cool, but wasn't she always?

Now that American teenagers know short-circuiting the school’s generator is all it takes to achieve popularity, expect to see many more blackouts on the six o’clock news.

On tonight’s episode of “Awkward,” after accidentally tossing a bucket of water into the school’s mainframe (we’ve all been there!), Jenna unwittingly became her school’s hero. The elective vandalism got classes canceled for the day, set a truly epic beach party into motion and got the popular crowd — some of whom hadn’t noticed Jenna since her days as “That Girl” — to shoot the blogger a second look. In short: hallway tomfoolery proved to suit J-Town especially well.

On the next installment of the show, J’s best friend Tamara will observe: “Put a flavored condom on your head, because your mind’s about to get blown — you’re legit popular!” But truthfully, what about Jenna’s changed? She may not have “Queen Bee” etched into her forehead, but she’s proven over the years to be charming, witty and able to raid her parent’s liquor cabinet at a moment’s notice. Hasn’t she always, in theory, had the makings of a popular kid?

Look back at five reasons we believe Jenna is, in reality, the ideal popular prototype, and see how she handles her new local fame on the next “Awkward” episode on Monday at 9/8c!

She knows what it’s like to fall from grace.

The higher you climb, the further you fall — unless, that is, you’ve already experienced a social nosedive. During Season 3 of the show -- in an attempt to join who she believed were the elites -- Jenna fell in with a bad crowd, scorned her friends and family and became an emblem of the slow stoner archetype. Suffice to say, she learned her lesson, and now that she’s aware of the risks of hanging with the in crowd, she’ll be too wise to make the same mistakes.

She can throw one hell of a party.

As previously stated: habitual drug use? No bueno. Occasional house party? Fine as wine! As early as the show’s first season, Jenna -- with the help of the eager Aunt Ally -- threw a rager for the books, complete with long-awaited hookups, laughs in line for the keg and many opportunities for memorable selfies. Sure, it temporarily made Jenna and Tamara enemies, but when the dust had cleared, the party was remembered for its high points, while its lows were eventually swept under the rug.

Her personality can charm a crowd.

Remember Angelique’s costume party? It wasn’t the flapper costumes, novelty cocktails or secret indiscretions that people remembered — it was Jenna’s candor in recounting the tale of her rumored suicide. Not only did the topic have her peers’ interest piqued, but she managed to make them laugh too. Maybe Jenna arrived in plainclothes, but she turned out to be the unexpected hit of the night -- and proved she needs no bells or whistles to keep her peers entertained.

She can get along with anyone.

Jenna’s survived church camp with Lissa, intense counseling sessions with Valerie Marks and even joined forces with Sadie Saxton for a short while to uncover the mystery of Eva. Most admirably, Jenna was able to let go of her personal bias against Gabby, the girl Matty McKibben dated after breaking up with her, enough to cultivate a friendship. If you can forge a connection with your ex’s new date, you can forge a connection with anyone.

It’s in her blood.

Kevin and Lacey were the toast of the town in their PHHS heyday, and they’re not afraid to tell you! Plus, as Lacey insisted on the most recent episode, she’ll always happily play the role of Jenna’s booze supplier. Aren’t moms the best!
