Since the Black Live Matter Movement came into the national spotlight following the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson last year, some people -- including Hillary Clinton -- have asked the organizers to develop a concrete plan for what laws and policies need to change in order to end racial injustice in the criminal justice system.

Campaign Zero is a new online tool from We The Protesters, the same amazing young protesters who developed the tools MappingPoliceViolence and StayWoke, that aims to do just that. As you might have guessed by the name, the campaign aims to reduce the number of police killings in the US...all the way down to zero.

"Look, I don't believe you change hearts," Clinton told a group of Black Lives Matter activists earlier this month. "I believe you change laws, you change allocation of resources, you change the way systems operate."

The Campaign Zero website explains, "more than one thousand people are killed by police violence every year in America," and "nearly sixty percent of victims did not have a gun or were involved in activities that should not require police interventions..."

But it isn't like this everywhere. The site goes on to explain that "police in England, Germany, Australia, Japan, and even cities like Newark, NJ, and Richmond, CA, demonstrate that public safety can be ensured without killing civilians."

The planning team for Campaign Zero looked at how those areas were policing effectively with much lower rates of violence, and also considered recommendations from research organizations, communities, and the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing to create a comprehensive plan for changing laws and policies at at the federal, state, and local levels with the ambitious goal of eliminating police violence entirely.

Their ideas for reform fall into 10 steps or categories, as explained in the graphic below. Each of these categories includes a comprehensive explanation on the Campaign Zero site," along with a step-by-step plan for reforming laws and policies at the state, local and federal levels.

The folks at Campaign Zero are also making it easy to figure out how the policies of the 2016 presidential candidates stack up in each of these categories by tracking what the candidates have proposed to address the issue of police violence in easy-to-read, color-coded charts. Brilliant.
