Cody Simpson Gave His Twitter Account To A Stranger For All The Right Reasons

Thair Orfahi's story of escape is seriously scary.

Cody Simpson has a new album, Free, to plug. Of course he wants you to buy it, tell your friends about it and maybe they'll buy it too. That explains why he's been tweeting about it for the past month.

But on Thursday, Simpson took a day off from promotion to do something totally different. He turned the keys of his Twitter account over to Syrian refugee Thair Orfahi, who shared his story of leaving Damascus in July and traveling to Berlin. Orfahi used the #ShareHumanity hashtag, established by the United Nations to let social influencers donate their Twitter feeds to people backing humanitarian causes (World Humanitarian Day is coming up on Aug. 19).

Orfahi's story is heartbreaking, harrowing and inspiring. Syria has been in the grips of a deadly civil war since 2011, when Syrians inspired by Arab Spring protests elsewhere in the region rose up against President Bashar Al-Assad. To date, more than 300,000 have been killed, 7.6 million displaced and another 4 million have fled the war zone.

Here are some of Orfahi's most dramatic tweets:

The Hand-Off To Thair

Cody announces that he's allowing Thair to tell his story.

Thair Posts Pics Of His New Friends At the U. Of Damascus, Worries About His Future

His next tweet, though, says "#Syria is filled with tension and fighting. I'm not sure what the future holds for me here."

Making The Final Decision To Leave

Just days after a bomb went off one street over, wounding a number of people, Thair laments that one in four Syrians are now refugees and decides that he must leave his country.

His Temporary New Home Isn't Safe, Either

After finding some peace by helping some refugees struggling with basic needs in Egypt, Thair decides that he must move again.

A Stolen Passport And A Scary Visit From The Police

Just after his decision to leave, Thair freaks out when his passport is stolen and he can't get a new one, which means he can't get a visa allowing him to stay in Egypt... And then the cops show up asking his host if she has any refugees in the house.

Paying Big Bucks To Cross The Border

It cost $2,000, but he makes it to Italy on a boat packed with fellow refugees.

Nothing In His Pocket, But Happy To Be Alive

He makes it to Italy -- with no passport, no money and no clothes -- but he's happy to be alive, even if his stay is only temporary. Next stop: Germany, if he can make it there by car without being caught.

Finally Makes It To Germany, A New Life Awaits

The long, dangerous trip ends in Munich, the entry point for many migrants. Thair applies for asylum and crosses his fingers it will be granted.
