Taylor Swift Gave Shawn Mendes A Birthday He Will ‘Never Forget’

Shawn tells us what it's like to have Taylor and 70,000 people sing you 'Happy Birthday.'

Being the opening artist for Taylor Swift on her 1989 World Tour would be a pretty sweet gig all its own. Tack on the fact that it's your birthday and suddenly the scene gets even sweeter because if we know anything about our girl Tay, it's that she's one helluva giftress.

Shawn Mendes, the Vine cover artist-turned-Swiftie opener, just celebrated his 17th birthday before a crowd of 70,000 in Seattle, Washington on Saturday (Aug. 8). So Tay being Tay, she ignited the entire crowd in a roaring rendition of the "Happy Birthday" song for Shawn during her set.

"I found out right before it happened and was so shocked. It was amazing!," Shawn told MTV News. "I think I hesitated for a second, like, 'Is she really bringing me on stage right now?'"

And she did, and the crowd had no problem in helping make his 17th birthday one he will "never forget."

"It was beyond the best feeling I could ever imagine. I can't even thank Taylor enough, I don't know who else gets to say they've had that many people sing them happy birthday all at once, it's so special," he said. "I'll never forget it."

Shawn spent the rest of his birthday with friends from home at a cabin outside of Seattle, and while he said it's "hard to compete with Taylor's gift bringing me onstage," he did get some "new music gear and a kayaking trip," as gifts.

Not a bad way to spend the big 1-7.
