FKA twigs' New EP Is Darkly Twisted But All About Finding The Light

Melissa isn't about an alter ego...

Not only is FKA twigs up for the Artist To Watch award at the VMAs later this month, but she's also releasing an EP any day now.

The singer, whose "Pendulum" is up for the Moonman, performed at Lollapalooza this weekend, and MTV News was on the ground at the Chicago music festival to ask her about her upcoming EP, Melissa.

"It's very raw and quite dark in places, but you've just got to go through it to get to the light," the 27-year-old British songstress told MTV correspondent Awkwafina. If the EP sounds complicated, that's because, well...

"It's complicated," twigs said. (OK, phew, it's not just us.) "Over the last year, I've really kind of grown into myself in terms of being a young woman and I've been thinking about just what it's like to be a girl or what it's like to have a female energy -- whether it's in a boy or a girl, there's a female energy -- how it can grow, how it can be attacked or how it can survive certain things. So I decided to call the EP Melissa because it's a girl's name."

twigs knew girls named Melissa while growing up, whether it be in school, dance class or a shop she used to work at. Melissa is a generic name she can use to personify femininity. "It's just a girl's name so it kind of embodies that energy for me. It's not an alter ego or anything," she said.

"It's a way of me objectifying that female energy so I could separate it into a place where I could write about it fairly and honestly rather than [from] too much of an emotional, subjective place," twigs said.
