Meet The Girl Group With A Minimum Age Of 80

These grannies have reached 'idol' status in Japan.

Japan's hottest new girl group is also the oldest. KBG84 is taking the country by storm, and while they have the pop hits just like any other band, they're not exactly in the same age group.

That's because the median age of KBG84 is 84.

These grannies, from the island of Kohama in Okinawa, have been rising up the charts, according to an AFP story. Their name is a play off of the quite younger group AKB48, and they have collected 33 members. Their current single is "Come On And Dance, Kohama Island."

“When I first heard someone call us ‘idols’ I thought an idol meant someone who had lived a long life and was at the gates of heaven,” Tomi Menaka, 92, told AFP. “But in Tokyo they told me it was an entertainer -- which was a relief because I thought it meant I was on my way to heaven. I hadn’t even been to Tokyo or Osaka. I wanted to go there before I went to heaven.”

The minimum age requirement for the group is 80. And during the interview, the ladies say that because of KBG84 they now have opportunities they never had before.

“I’ve never been as happy as I am when we perform,” Menaka said. “Going to Tokyo for the first time, I thought I was so lucky to be born. I got to meet my grandchildren. I’ll never forget it. I was moved to tears.”
