Khloe Kardashian is no stranger to making bold fashion statements, but her latest choice of clothing has caused an overwhelmingly negative stir.

The reality star is currently in Dubai, where she snapped a selfie on Tuesday (May 26) showing off her niqab, a traditional garment that covers the head and face. Women in the Muslim community wear them according to their religious and cultural beliefs, though visitors to the country aren’t required to participate.

Khloe captioned the pic, “Habibi love,” using an Arabic word that means “my baby” or “my darling.” Commenters immediately pounced on the pic and debated whether her fashion choice is appropriate or offensive — though most claimed the latter.

On the one hand, some commenters pointed out that a niqab is “not a fashion statement” and “isn’t a costume that you can just put on bc it makes your eyes look cool.” However, others defended Khloe by suggesting that maybe she thought she was respecting the culture by dressing according to their customs.

This isn’t the first time the 30-year-old has been called out for cultural appropriation. Last year, she came under fire for posting photos of herself wearing a Native American headdress.

Then last Halloween, she posted a photo while wearing a lace mask that covered half her face, alongside her brother-in-law Scott Disick and their friend Chris Reda, who donned traditional Arabian clothing. She captioned the pic, “Sheik Pu---,” and was hit with an onslaught of criticism by people who called it offensive.

Khloe later addressed the incident on an episode of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” where she apologized for her insensitivity.

“I’m really upset that I’ve offended anybody,” she said in the episode. “I’m even more bothered that the commenters think I’m poking fun at their culture. I didn’t realize how offensive it was. I didn’t know I was doing anything wrong. I really just have to be more aware of what I write, even if I think it’s tongue in cheek and I have to be more sensitive to that. I’m sorry to anybody I offended. That was the last thing I ever wanted to do.”

Khloe has yet to comment on the niqab photo, but if she eventually does, she’ll likely express a similar sentiment. Hopefully, she’ll learn from it this time and keep her potentially offensive selfies to herself.
