11 Burning Questions 'Gotham' Season 2 Must Bat-Answer

For example, do you bleed?

The first season of FOX's "Gotham" sequel is officially in the can -- or in the cave, as it were -- and with a second season already guaranteed, we've got some questions that need answering faster than you can say, "Leave the room, Harvey."

Here's everything we still need to know about season one, going into season two.

What's in the hatch?

"Gotham" ended on a pretty potent image, as Bruce (David Mazouz) and Alfred (Sean Pertwee) looked down the crumbling staircase beneath the mansion revealed behind Thomas Wayne's fireplace. It's reminiscent of the ending of the first season of "LOST" not just because it's basically the exact same shot, but because it also raises a host of questions.

First of all, this is the Batcave, right? Or at least, what will eventually become the Batcave, given we hear the screeching of bats from below.

The second, bigger question is, why did Thomas have a cave under the mansion, years before his son would put on a cape and cowl? Are we going to get a gigantic twist on the Bat-mythos, and find out that Bruce won't be the first vigilante (or second, after that guy who killed people with weather balloons) in Gotham?

Is that it for the mob?

In Bat-lore, Batman's emergence as a hero coincided with the handover of Gotham City from the traditional mob, to the freaks. Except, by the end of "All Happy Families Are Alike," Maroni (David Zayas) is dead, and Falcone (John Doman) has left town for "good." That leaves Oswald (Robin Lord Taylor) shouting at the heavens as thunder strikes, saying, "I'm the king of Gotham!"

So with Penguin flying higher than any penguin has in history, is Gotham the land of the rogues now? Probably not, right? After all, with two mob bosses gone, the rest of Gotham's organized crime will be decidedly less organized, and isn't going to roll over and start following Penguin immediately.

Is Penguin too erratic?

Related, the guy who killed Fish Mooney and a ton of mobsters on both sides is going to have a hard time building an empire without any subjects to follow him. He's had a plan in the past, but can he tamp down his monstrous side enough to really hold on to the power he thinks he deserves?

Is Edward Nygma gone for good?

Jessica Miglio/FOX

Sure seems that way... He's clearly fallen into madness, and having gotten away semi-clean with one murder is only going to spiral into more. For now, we don't expect him to quit his day job -- but we expect his night job to pick up significantly.

Is Selina Kyle ba-ba-ba-bad to the bone?

Jessica Miglio/FOX

Gotham-ep122_scn29_38622_hires2

Nah, she never is, right? Even though Selina (Camren Bicondova) ended up on Fish Mooney's side, trussing up Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Bullock (Donal Logue) like yesterday's fish, she's clearly going to hop back and forth before settling firmly on the middle of the fence... Just like a cat.

What about Ba-ba-barbara?

FOX

This is a way better question. Thanks, me. You're welcome. Barbara (Erin Richards) went bat-s--t insane, nearly cutting her romantic rival to ribbons and claiming that she killed her own parents. Unless we missed something, the latter isn't true, so was she trying to goad Leslie (Morenna Baccarin) into killing her? Or was she legitimately trying to kill her for sleeping with Gordon? And did she survive having her head knocked into the floor a whole lot?

Chances are she's survived (despite my plea to kill her off last week), but when we're back can she be saved? Or is she just one of the new freaks Gotham has created?

Is Gordon a good guy now?

Jessica Miglio/FOX

Not that he was ever bad, but a lot of James Gordon's arc this year has been about losing his own soul in order to save Gotham's. With Carmine Falcone giving him the blessing of Gordon's own father in the form of a switchblade (don't ask), has he finally decided to go on the straight (razor) and narrow, or will he flirt even more with the darkness next year?

Will Bullock ever get something to do?

Jessica Miglio/FOX

Other than backing up Gordon and joking with hookers, of course; but if any actor has been underserved by the this first season it's the excellent Donal Logue, who has essentially played second fiddle -- if he showed up at all. In season two, Logue must have a character arc that's all his own, and a good one.

Are Leslie and Gordon 4evah?

Jessica Miglio/FOX

Gotham-ep122_scn42_A43_hires2

Well... No. As much as we like Baccarin -- and comic book continuity shows that Thompkins is around for the long term -- Gordon ends up with Barbara. But before that, he has a bit of a dalliance with Captain Essen (Zabryna Guevara), and who knows who else. So who is Ryan Atwood gonna be smooching in season two?

Where are Montoya and Allen?

FOX

Gotham-Detectives-Montoya-and-Allen

They're on this show, right? Because I don't think they've shown up for weeks.

Who is the Big Bad?

Jessica Miglio/FOX

Gotham-ep122_scn12_38097_hires2

Fish is gone. The Dollmaker is torn apart by his own inmates. And The Ogre has gone off to that great big swamp in the sky. So who will be the Big Bad for season two? My fingers are crossed a million times for the Court of Owls, an epic villain organization from recent Batman comics who would perfectly fill the void left by big crime; but it could also be Nygma, Penguin again, or maybe even someone new.

Oh, and of course there's baby Joker, always somewhere in the background...
