John Legend’s New ‘Pitch Perfect’-Inspired Reality Show Sounds Aca-Mazing

The 'Glory' singer is returning to his college a cappella roots with 'Sing It On.'

Good news for all you aca-fanatics who’ve had The Bellas’ rendition of “Party In The U.S.A.” playing on loop while you wait for “Pitch Perfect 2”: a whole bunch of real-life a cappella action is coming soon to TV!

A new “Pitch Perfect”-inspired reality show called “Sing It On” is currently in the works for the cable network Pop (formerly The TV Guide Network). The series, which premieres May 13, follows five college a cappella teams on the road to the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) Finals.

The five teams are represented by three schools around the country. And the contenders are — drumroll please — Florida State University’s AcaBelles and All Night Yahtzee, University of Illinois’ No Comment, and Northeastern University’s Nor’easters and Pitch, Please! Based on the names alone, we’re already rooting for the latter team.

A sneak peek at the first episode (via Entertainment Weekly) offers a glimpse into the grueling audition process as a bunch of hopefuls belt out One Republic’s “Counting Stars.” Much like the hilarious try-outs in “Pitch Perfect,” there’s a clear mix of promising stars and cringe-worthy “hard no’s,” as one judge puts it.

The best part is, the show is being executive produced by John Legend, who — fun fact! — performed in an a cappella group at his alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania. He even directed the UPenn Counterparts, led them to the ICCA Finals in 1997, and was named the Best Soloist in the quarterfinals that year. Oh yeah, and then he went on to achieve mass global success and rack up a ton of Grammys, a Golden Globe, and even an Oscar.

At Pop’s recent upfront presentation announcing the show, Legend said, "I had so much fun singing a cappella in college. The music, the friendships, the competitions were all a huge part of my college experience. We're excited to be a part of a show that documents the real ups and downs of this interesting world that many know nothing about.”

Also, if you want to see an insanely accurate foretelling of Legend’s legendary post-college career, check out this article from UPenn’s student newspaper. It was originally published in 1999, back when Legend was a senior majoring in English and still going by his birth name, John Stephens. The article begins:

“As John Stephens sang the last word of ‘Baby’ during the Dec. 5 concert of one of Penn's classiest a cappella groups, Counterparts, someone muttered, ‘He has an unbelievable voice; he'll be famous someday.’

When asked what he thinks of that prediction, Stephens, a senior English major, said through an embarrassed laugh, ‘I hope so.’”

Pretty crazy, right?!

Anyway, Legend has a lot on his plate between this new show and his forthcoming musical romantic drama starring Miguel, but we love that he hasn’t forgotten his aca-mazing roots.
