11 Times ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Lied To Us And Made Us Want To Scream

Enough with the lies already!

With a name like "Pretty Little Liars," you kinda know what you're signing up for: a show about lies. (So many lies.) TBH, we don’t mind when the Powers That Be stretch the truth here and there, but some lies are way more extreme than others. And given the show’s latest red herring, we really need to vent.

Is it too hard to ask for a little commitment? After all, we commit every single Tuesday night to you, "PLL." And we’d like a little respect in return. Or, you know, some freakin' honesty every once in awhile. At least it looks like the writers are sticking to the "Charles is A" reveal. If only we knew who this Charles was, amirite?

So, to help you pass the time while you wait three long months for "Pretty Little Liars" to return with season six, we've decided to round up the biggest lies the show has ever told. Let's take a stroll down memory lane, shall we?

Ali is dead.

ABC Family

Ali DiLaurentis on PLL

LOL. We’re going straight to the jugular with this one. Remember when we thought Ali was dead for four seasons? And then it turned out that she faked her death to go on the lam from A? Because that’s what any reasonable 16-year-old would do, obviously. Don’t get us wrong. Ali’s return in the season four finale -- and the epic, "did you miss me?" gif it gave us -- was satisfying AF. But did the Powers That Be really have to continually lie to our faces about it for years? #Rude.

Mona is dead.

ABC Family

Mona Vanderwaal on Pretty Little Liars

In the season five midseason finale, A “killed” Mona. We even saw A stash her body in the back of his trunk! The camera zoomed in to show us her bloody, DEAD face!! But Mona was not dead. She showed up in the season five finale totally effing fine. We know Mona planned to fake her death, but was A’s assault real? Who knows. But it would have been nice to see the writers finally commit to a huge death. I love Mona. She’s an awesome character, and a small part of me is happy she’s back. At the same time, however, I’m mad at the writers for having their cake and eating it too. A note to all of the fair-weather “PLL” fans: even if you see a bloody body in the back of a trunk, the writers will still find a way to bring them back to life.

Toby is A.

ABC Family

Toby on Pretty Little Liars

Toby's "tragic" betrayal as A is by far the greatest reveals the show has ever produced. That moment in the season two midseason finale where he turned around and we saw him in the black hoodie still gives me shivers. But the joy was short-lived because Toby wasn’t actually A. He had joined the A team to protect Spencer (aww) and to gather info on the Big Bad. We guess that’s somewhat redeemable.

Ezra is A.

ABC Family

Ezra, PLL

It was too good to be true. In the season four midseason finale, Ezra is revealed to be A -- or, you know, a creepy stalker. And it was great. Ian Harding relished in the bad guy role, we finally had an excuse to hate on Ezria and it was fun to think that A had been right there, under our noses, all along. (Sorry, Charles, but it’s TRUE.) Of course, "PLL" boss Marlene King and co. went and pulled yet another fast one on us. Ezra wasn’t A! He was just stalking the Liars for "research." He was writing a true crime novel (LOL) on Ali’s disappearance and therefore, spied on her best friends, who just so happened to be his students. Oh, and then he hooked up with one of them and started a relationship with her. Clearly, Ezra isn’t shady at all. Burn me once, shame on you, "PLL." Burn me twice, shame on me.

Spencer killed Bethany Young.

ABC Family

Spencer on Pretty Little Liars

We’re still not entirely sure how Radley patient Bethany Young fits into the seedy haps in Rosewood, but we know her death has something to do with A. The Liars first started to unravel the Bethany mystery in season four, and it looked like Spencer might have been the one to put Bethany in her grave. Long story short: Bethany was the girl found in Ali’s grave, and Spencer, high on the performance pills she had been taking, was caught red-handed by Mrs. DiLaurentis with a muddy shovel on the night Ali “disappeared.” Of course, Mrs. D. knew the truth: she was the one who buried Ali after someone -- presumably Charles -- hit Ali on the head with a rock. But she had no idea Mrs. Grunwald saved Ali from her shallow grave. So TL;DR: Mrs. DiLaurentis planned to pin Ali’s murder on Spencer... until she ended up dead. It turned out Spencer had nothing to do with Bathany’s murder. It was her sister Melissa who accidentally buried Bethany alive, thinking Spence had killed her with the shovel.

Ian is dead.

ABC Family

Ian Thomas Pretty Little Liars

Okay, so maybe Ian is really dead, but he didn’t die in the bell tower like "Pretty Little Liars" had us believe. After he was left literally hanging in the bell tower in season one, the Liars believed he was dead. But nope. He showed up (out of nowhere, BTW) in season two, only to be found dead -- for real this time -- in a barn episodes later. At first, it looked like a suicide, but we're pretty sure A played a part in Ian's demise. Sorry Ian, but it's not like we were sad to see you go (again).

Ezra is a dad.

ABC Family

Ezra and Malcolm Pretty Little Liars

Remember when we all thought Ezra was a DILF for a hot second? His ex-boo Maggie came back to Rosewood in season four and dropped a bombshell on him: he was daddy. Apparently, Mrs. Fitz paid Maggie to skip town when she found out she was pregnant. She didn't want a baby distracting her son from his promising career... as a high school teacher. It was kinda cute to watch Ezra bond with Malcolm. But the happiness didn't last. After a DNA test proved Malcolm wasn't his, Maggie confessed to getting drunk one night and sleeping with someone else. Ouch!

Spencer is on the A team.

ABC Family

Spencer on '

Way back in season three, Spencer joined the A team. Why? Because she had been driven slightly mad by Toby’s betrayal and subsequent “death,” so she decided to see what this A team was all about. And take A down from the inside, obviously. We didn't know at the time that her allegiance to A was just a ploy to help the Liars, so for a few glorious weeks, we thought one of our own had gone over to the dArk side -- until King and co. killed our dreams. Yet another A reveal fake-out. Hope does breed eternal misery after all, Spence.

Melissa is pregnant.

ABC Family

Melissa Hastings on Pretty Little Liars

Surprise! Melissa Hastings was never pregnant with Ian's baby. She was sadly blackmailed by A to fake the entire thing. It was later revealed that Melissa actually was pregnant the summer Ali went missing. She and Ian had gone to Cape May to have an abortion, but she lost the baby before they even got there.

Toby's mom committed suicide.

ABC Family

Sad Toby on Pretty Little Liars

Toby had always believed his mom committed suicide in Radley, but in season four he uncovered a document that proved otherwise. Marion Cavanaugh was actually in a pretty good place just days before her death, telling her therapist that she intended to repay everyone who ever helped her. Upon his discovery, Toby then made a deal with the devil (yes, A) to get more evidence. And in season five, Spencer and Aria discovered that Bethany Young drew a picture of a woman falling off a building, which means Bethany definitely knew something about the incident. Marion's death is still a mystery, but I think we can all agree it wasn't an accident.

Jenna is blind.

ABC Family

Jenna Marshall, Pretty Little Liars

Okay, so maybe this one is a half-truth. Jenna may be blind now, but way back in season three, she was just a biotch who was faking her blindness. Her eye surgery was, in fact, successful -- but not permanent. She had the entire school wrapped around her pretty little finger, but the Liars saw past the shade of it all. (Pun intended.)
