On International Day Of Happiness, Ed Sheeran Admits Nothing Makes Him Happier Than Independent Women

What does #HappySoundLike to you?

March 20th marks the International Day of Happiness, a day recognized by the United Nations (UN) to promote the idea that “the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal.”

This year, the UN teamed up with MixRadio to create the ultimate “happy” playlist, which is sure to liven up any train ride or dreaded visit to the treadmill.

The campaign pulls together tracks selected by your favorite artists like Cody Simpson, Pharrell, Charli XCX, Ed Sheeran, Pitbull, as well as fans (like you!) participating at home using the hashtag #HappySoundsLike. The goal of the playlist is to celebrate the idea “that music has the ability to bring a moment of joy and inspire hope for a better tomorrow.”

"The pursuit of happiness is serious business," said United Nations Secretary Ban Ki Moon on the day's official website. "Happiness for the entire human family is one of the main goals of the United Nations."

By raising Happiness Awareness, the event’s organizers want to show how “working to end conflict, poverty and other unfortunate conditions, in which so many of our fellow human beings live” can make the world a happier place.

Cody Simpson for International Happiness Day

Singer-songwriter Cody Simpson said teaming up with the campaign felt like a "natural fit," and that he was excited to use the power of music to "encourage people to spread their happiness and kind words, actions and thoughts to others."

"Music really has the power to bring a smile to people's faces," Simpson said.

The official playlist will be launched at South By Southwest in Texas on the 20th, but until then, check out a few of our favorites from the list and find out more about the UN’s awesome campaigns. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #HappySoundsLike and add your favorite songs to the list!

Cody Simpson gets happy to Lou Bega's "Mambo No. 5"

The singer-songwriter officially kicks off the playlist with a Sweet Sixteen/Eighth Grade Dance favorite. Semi-related, the UN’s ambitious Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) look to eliminate gender disparities in primary and secondary education, ensuring that classrooms will see more than just a little bit of Monica, Erica, Rita and Tina.

"Mambo #5 by Lou Bega is an amazing song!" Simpson told MTV News. "It has the ability to get everyone up and dancing from the first beat."

Charli XCX is all about the Spice Girls' "Say You'll Be There"

Charli’s pick nails it on the happiness fronts. This song brings back all the joyfully nostalgic sleepover and middle school talent-show memories. It’s everything (this I swear.)

Ed Sheeran loves Destiny's Child's "Independent Women"

Sheeran knows what’s up. Much like Queen Bey, the UN’s ambitious Millennium Development Goals include empowering women by challenging the gender gaps in the work force and providing women with more opportunities for economic growth, according to a recent Human Development Report.

As legal discrimination of women is still incredibly common, the UN finds that across 143 economies in 2013, 128 had at least one legal difference in how women and men are treated; 56 countries have more than five of these legal barriers and 28 had more than ten.

“These barriers include restricting women’s ability to access institutions (such as obtaining an ID card), own property, build credit, or get a job. In 15 economies, husbands can prevent their wives from working,” the report said. “One’s ability to choose whether to seek a paid job, and what type of work to do, is an important expression of agency, and so fundamental to human development.”

Pitbull picked his own song, "My Jam"

It is important to make YOURSELF happy, so well played, Pitbull. Well played.

David Guetta chose John Lennon & Yoko Ono's "Imagine"

Guetta chose a classic activist’s anthem about cooperation and working together to reach a common goal. It’s lovely, and much like the UN’s MDG to create a Global Partnership for Development, it calls on the spirit of collaboration, empathy and mutual understanding to make lasting impacts.

SO -- what song is making YOU happy today?
