John Mayer On Taylor Swift: 'Everybody Stop'

Mayer gives his ex-girlfriend props for using her voice to start real conversations about music.

John Mayer isn't afraid to talk about his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift. And he's plenty aware of how the media has played out their relationship.

In a recent MSNBC interview, Mayer dished on Swift, and how their songs about each other were only viewed as pieces of their romantic story -- rather than actual pieces of music. Swift wrote the song "Dear John" about Mayer, while he wrote "Paper Doll" about her.

"I put out a song called 'Paper Doll.' The song never got listened to as a song. It became a news story because of the lyrics," Mayer said. "Let's just...everybody stop. Nobody's got an incurable cancer. We're rich people who get to live out our dreams. Let's just stop it."

So - enough about their relationship, I suppose.

However, Mayer did talk about how he respects Swift as a superstar who uses her voice to create change. Only a few artists are influential enough that people will listen to them, and Mayer said that Taylor is using her voice to talk about the music industry -- rather than what dress she's wearing at the Met Gala.

"When you go to the Met Ball, that's great. It's a great way to use your voice and go, 'I'm wearing Valentino,' or you could use your voice to give things," Mayer said, going on to reference Swift's controversial decision to pull her music from streaming service Spotify.

"There's like four people who get all the press, and if any of those four people say, 'I want to speak for those people who would just never make this a story' — The only reason we're talking about Taylor Swift taking Spotify on is because she's Taylor Swift!" he added.

In conclusion, Taylor Swift is all.
