It's hard to single out a hairstyle that has caused as much ~emotional drama~ as the rattail. Whether you love it or hate it, that long (sometimes braided!) patch of hair along the neck has created a wide social divide. It peaked in the '80s and '90s thanks to punk culture rising in popularity (the OG look was probably something like this), and since it was a more badass variation of the once-trendy mullet, you probably spotted at least one kid in middle school wearing this stand-out look.
Since then, the now-infamous rattail has stayed out of the mainstream—well, save for a few brave celebrities. Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and even Anne Hathaway have worn this head-turning hairstyle, and just this week, we noticed a new member of the elite rattail club: Shia LaBeouf. So, we need to ask: Can any of these peeps change your mind about this highly-debated look? Let's find out.
Shia LaBeouf, 2015
Shia was spotted sporting a tiny, braided patch of hair over his shoulder (also, an eyebrow piercing?) while in the San Fernando Valley on Friday, and man, the internet could not handle it. After just one quick Twitter search, you'll see a collective sigh of disappointment over this new look. We're not sure if this hairstyle is for a movie role or if Shia is just changing up his fashion game, but wow, it's amazing how a teeny lock of hair can cause such emotional rage. Here 4 u, Shia.
Anne Hathaway, 2014Warner Bros. Records
Last year in Jenny Lewis' video "Just One Of The Guys," Anne wore a rattail to complete her dude transformation and honestly, it really works. Like, maybe too well.
Ninja of Die Antwoord, 2014Getty Images
Ninja has been wearin' his flat top and ’tail for as long as we can remember. In fact, it's become such a staple of his overall look, we couldn't imagine him without it. Never change, Ninja.
Rihanna, 2013Getty Images
Rihanna changes her hairstyle so often it's hard to keep track, but in 2013, she briefly wore a short ’do with a longer piece down the back. Even though she never braided it, we think she managed to make this extra piece of hair look fly. (Heh.)
Miley Cyrus, 2013MTV
Kelis, 2010Getty Images
Kelis sported perhaps the most decked-out rattail of all: a long, fishtail-braided silver strand complete with a spiky headband. Betcha never thought an old school look could be so futuristic, huh?
Keri Hilson, 2009Getty Images
In 2009, Keri proudly sported a sleek rattail with her short, brown-banged ’do.
