We Don't Think M.I.A. Will Be Celebrating the Super Bowl This Year

Maya gives a middle-finger salute on Instagram three years after her controversial performance.

While you're off gathering snacks and drinks for today's Super Bowl game, it's important to remember not everyone is in the game-day spirit. Take M.I.A. for example, who took to her Instagram to "celebrate" the yearly football game in her signature, opinionated style.

"Happy super bowl Sunday!" she added as a caption.

We're guessing Maya is not too concerned with Deflategate or Marshawn Lynch, but she might have an interest in Katy Perry's halftime show.

It's been three years since M.I.A. made a memorable guest appearance at the Super Bowl during Madonna's halftime performance. The rapper joined Madonna and Nicki Minaj for a performance of Madonna's latest single, "Give Me all Your Luvin." After a rousing few minutes, M.I.A. gave the camera the same middle-finger salute, leading to a lawsuit from the league for $1.5 million.

In late 2013, Maya released a video statement calling out what she considered the hypocrisy of the NFL's decision, and asking fans to submit evidence of NFL wrongdoing. In August 2014, an attorney for M.I.A. released a statement claiming the NFL and the rapper reached a confidential settlement.

We don't blame her for bowing out of this year's events (even with Missy Elliot scheduled to make a guest appearance during the halftime show). It's only a few hours lost anyway.
