'Gotham' Star Robin Lord Taylor Answers That Joker Theory Once And For All

Could the Penguin really be the Clown?

Back in October, a reddit user posted a theory that blew many a mind in the "Gotham" fandom: that fan-favorite Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) was not actually Batman's villain The Penguin, but the Joker himself.

Now, given Cobblepot's black-and-white aesthetic and newfound enthusiasm for his nickname, this theory seems unlikely. But it still gained a lot of traction, with multiple outlets picking up the reddit thread and giving it some life. So when MTV News sat down with Taylor to chat about the show, we decided to ask the man himself -- could Oswald Cobblepot really be Batman's most famous villain in disguise?

"I find it incredibly unlikely, but at the same time, I have no idea what could happen," Taylor said. "I get the scripts and I'll read something, and I will be just as shocked as everyone else is when they see it happen onscreen."

Cobblepot becoming the Joker probably won't be happening onscreen, but Taylor definitely read the theory -- and found it very impressive.

"I read it, and I was like, 'Huh,'" he explained. "I was like, 'Nah.' But then I was so impressed at the detail that this person went into... the guy who formulated this theory. I was just amazed at the amount of attention that people are paying to the show. I mean, he was looking at the colors of my vest and my suit, and extrapolating off of that."

Welcome to the reddit universe, man. So it looks like Robin Lord Taylor won't be morphing into the Joker anytime soon, but when the clown-man himself does show up, the Penguin will be there to greet him with open arms.

"The more rich characters from the Batman world that we can introduce, I think it's just better for the show. I'm just so excited to see what happens, just like everybody else."
