When a magazine as fashionable as W puts out its annual movie issue, you know you're in for some pretty artsy-fartsy, freaky type s--t.

But nothing could have prepared us for the pleasantly weird surprise that was this year's edition, which was devoted to the best performances of 2014 and featured 39 actors doing... well, something. Our Style team pored over these images for 30 minutes and still couldn't figure out what W was trying to do, so there.

All confusion aside, we love the photos for their extreme bizarre-ness, which the mag says was inspired by "the colorful, sun-drenched Los Angeles paintings and photographs of David Hockney, as well as the '70s free-love aesthetic that informs the artist's work."
