When the #1 modifier for Christmas sweaters is "ugly," how do you determine which ones are the best? And then once you've done that, how do you go about ranking them? The answer (to both of those questions) is: You make it up.

So, because you need a diversion to kill a few minutes, here are the 21 best Christmas sweaters from movies (and not all of them are Christmas movies), ranked from worst to best. Spoiler alert: There is a LOT of representation from The Santa Clause.

Kevin McCallister, Home Alone

Home Alone is one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time. Kevin McCallister's heathered red knit? Not so much. The way it holds up against his weight when hanging from that coat hook is impressive, though.

Santa Claus, Fred Claus

Technically, this is a vest, but we should never forget that Paul Giamatti played Santa Claus and played dad to Vince Vaughn in the same film.

Nora Krank, Christmas With The Kranks

I have respect for Lady Krank's turtleneck game here, but applique poinsettias are just not it. Quote me.

Scott Calvin/Santa Claus, The Santa Clause 2

OK, this black and tan fair isle is one I would wear well into January and February—it's got that bold but timeless ski lodge thing going on—but that just makes it a good sweater. Not a good Christmas sweater. Luckily, there are plenty of knits from the Santa Clause franchise to go around.

Tom Valco, Surviving Christmas

Again, this colorway is timeless, but when you're standing next to a marabou neckline... Well, it's hard to shine.

Dead guy, Die Hard

Stephanie, All I Want For Christmas

I've never seen All I Want For Christmas, but the only reason this sweater isn't higher is because it's not being worn by baby Thora Birch. A lodge sweater with little skiers knit into the pattern??? This is fantastic.

Lloyd Christmas, Dumb And Dumber

You can't see it well in this shot, but Lloyd's sweater has a pretty interesting rolled mock neck which is v mod and v appropriate for his stooge-y haircut. (P.S. Did you know that Lloyd's last name was Christmas??????)

Lars Lindstrom, Lars And The Real Girl

I wouldn't advise watching this movie with your family this holiday, but Lars' sweater here is dope. The detail! The tiny moose pattern! RyGos' mustache!

Scott Calvin/Santa Claus, The Santa Clause 2

Now, THIS is a Christmas sweater. Even better, it has a cool henley neck with little pewter buttons, and Scott takes it to the next level with an accent red mock neck. Well played.

SPOILER: Scott has completely settled into his ~Santa~ identity by the third installment, and it shows on this cool gray knit with mirrored moose and zig-zig trim.

The facing moose motif has been around since the first movie, but the throwback isn't as good as the original because THIS sweater is a zip-up, has a luxurious shawl neck, AND was worn with a matching bobble knit beanie. *mic drop*

John, Love Actually

John might be a porn star, but he still knows how to cover up. This sweater is Christmas peacocking at its best.

Tracy, The Santa Clause

This isn't just a Christmas sweater with Santa on it. This is a Christmas sweater with Santa as portrayed by Tim Allen on it. And it has a velvet hat. And a faux fur beard. And it's worn by Molly Shannon. And it's a turtleneck.

Neil Miller, The Santa Clause

But the ultimate Santa Clause sweater praise has to go to the OG Coogi bawse, Neil Miller. He may be a total wet blanket and his sweaters may get ragged on a bunch in the films, but in hindsight, I'm giving Neil all the props for knowing what he likes and not being afraid to wear what he wants, even in the face of rampant criticism. YOU DO YOU, NEIL.

Clark Griswold, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

TBH, Clark Griswold's knit is a pretty standard Christmas sweater. I appreciate that it's a winter-specific play on a striped sweater. And I think the color palette is a timeless one. But it's only this far up because Chevy Chase is bae. xoxo

Jess Bradford, Black Christmas

It may be a horror film, but Black Christmas got in on the sweater game. Jess wears this black v-neck sweater with two giant interlaced hands. Not very Christmas-y but neither is the film, so.

Dale Doback, Step Brothers

Dale represents for a Christmas knit not often seen in film: the Christmas landscape sweater. Instead of a pattern, Dale's rocking a winter scene with scarf-wearing reindeer and boughs of holly. Adorable.

Mark Darcy, Bridget Jones's Diary

NOW WE'RE TALKING. Mark Darcy throws down the gauntlet in this Rudolph knit. Christmas AF (even if Bridget Jones's Diary is not).

The Grinch, Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Yes, somehow, the ANTI-Christmas character ended up at the top of the list. Granted, the people of Hooville gifted him with this knit, but if there's anything those guys know, it's Christmas. This thing is swagged out with a full applique tree across the chest, jingle bells on EVERY STRIPE, an endless line of "HO HO HO" around the waistband, and mad glitter everywhere.
