Who Were The Most Feminist Celebrities Of 2014?

Emma Watson was one of many women who took a strong feminist stance this year.

While being a feminist is certainly not something that should be a competition, it still feels like a step in the right direction that the Ms. Foundation is honoring those celebrities who are doing their part to advance the cause by declaring the top feminists of this year.

In case you need a simple reminder, the primary tenet of feminism is simply that men and women should be equal. Period. How anyone could honestly be against that principle in 2014 is hard to wrap your mind around, but luckily, this year marked a special spotlight on the feminist movement.

The Ms. Foundation's poll ended up voting none other than Hermione Granger Emma Watson. Emma served as a UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador, and urged men to get involved with the cause of feminism by launching the HeForShe campaign earlier this year.

Laverne Cox, the "Orange Is The New Black" actress who has been a monumental figure in the transgender rights movement came in second, a feat I'm going to assume came in right around the same spot on her year-end highlights as this Christmas card from Beyonce. Speaking of Beyonce, she came in at fourth place—right behind political commentator Rachel Maddow who was third place.

I know what you're thinking: Beyonce at fourth place?? Behind mere mortals like Rachel Maddow?? Well, let's keep in mind that this was just an online survey and certainly not definitive proof of true power rankings. And like I sad before, there's no competition among who is the most feminist! Anything that supports feminism supports all women. And that's what Beyonce, Emma and Laverne would want us all to remember.

Here's the full top ten list:

1. Emma Watson

2. Laverne Cox

3. Rachel Maddow

4. Beyoncé

5. Cher

6. Amy Poehler

7. Tina Fey

8. Meryl Streep

9. Mindy Kaling

10. Ann Curry

"We celebrate all feminists every day, but today we're giving a hat tip to celebrities who are helping to promote women's equality," Teresa Younger, the Ms. Foundation President and CEO, said in a statement. "Every celebrity on the list has either embraced the term 'feminist,' spoken out for women's equal rights, or battled against sexist oppression."
