UPDATE: James Franco and Seth Rogen, stars of "The Interview," have canceled all of their upcoming press appearances in support of the movie, according to BuzzFeed.

It is unclear whether the cancellations are directly related to the threatening message detailed below.

In the latest development in the Sony hacking scandal, there's an alleged physical threat to moviegoers who buy tickets to screenings of "The Interview."

The massive entertainment company has been under siege for the past several weeks, as reams of emails sent and received by employees, personal information of employees and their families, corporate finance information and budgets and more were released to the public.

The hackers, whose identity is yet to be confirmed but call themselves the Guardians of Peace, are purportedly angry with the planned release of "The Interview," the Seth Rogen and James Franco-starring film that portrays the planned assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

A new message shared with media outlets and printed by The Wrap, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, The Los Angeles Times, BuzzFeed and others invokes the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places “The Interview” be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.

MTV News has reached out to Sony for comment on the statement, and has not received response as of press time.

"The Interview" stars Rogen and Franco as two television journalists who travel to North Korea to interview Kim Jong-Un, and are recruited by the CIA to assassinate him as well. A Christmas Day release is planned.
