6 Things You Need To Know About 'Mockingjay'

The latest installment of 'The Hunger Games' soars.

For months, we've been peppered with propaganda-style advertising and the teasiest of teaser trailers for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," and now the Capitol the movie is finally within sight. Before the first part of "Mockingjay" flies into theaters November 21, here are six spoiler-free things you should know about the movie.

1. Effie Lives -- And Thank God For That

Though Effie doesn't pop up in the book version of "Mockingjay" until the last few lines, Elizabeth Banks is all over the movie, bringing levity, hilarity, and an infinitely quotable line about missing her wigs. She's a bright spot in what could otherwise be a very bleak movie.

2. There's Plenty Of Peeta

Fans who were worried that having Katniss and Peeta (Keeta? Patniss?) separated by the horrors of war, don't worry: There'll be plenty of material for you to ship your little heart out. Director Francis Lawrence found ways to make the two interact, both through flashbacks that will have you clutching your heart, and an especially tense on-air exchange in one of Beetee's (Jeffrey Wright) battles for the Capitol airwaves.

3. Buttercup Hate

Are you a dog person? Good. Buttercup the cat is arguably as villainous in this movie as President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Just FYI. Cat people, you've got some 'splainin to do.

4. There Are Plenty Of New Faces, Even When They're Old Friends

Cast freshmen Julianne Moore, Natalie Dormer, Mahershala Ali, Elden Henson and more shine in their roles as residents of District 13, but it's characters like Finnick (Sam Claflin) who really wow in this movie. Finnick, introduced in "Catching Fire" as a saucy, usually shirtless tribute, makes a complete 180 after the traumatic finale of that story. The broken Finnick we see in "Mockingjay" is a testament to Claflin's abilities and only deepens the story.

5. That Jennifer Lawrence Can Act

Haters to the left, but we're going to go out on a limb and say that "Mockingjay" only serves to underline the acting ability that earned Lawrence an Oscar. You don't notice great acting until it's contrasted with terrible acting, and it's hard for a good actor to act badly. That said, a sequence where Lawrence plays a decidedly camera-shy Katniss in a scripted video shoot shows us just how good Lawrence is. Snaps for her.

6. The Ending Will Leave You Writhing On The Floor In Pain

It's not a cliffhanger on the same level of "Catching Fire," where we watched in a tight zoom as Lawrence ran through about 13 different emotions and stages of acceptance that her whole world was about to change (again), but the finale of "Mockingjay - Part 1" certainly left us swatting at air. The screenplay pulled off a tricky thing: the movie feels complete and encapsulated, but there's still clearly more to come.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" hits theaters November 21.
