U2 Brought Strings, Melancholy And Infinite Sadness To Their 'Every Breaking Wave' EMA Performance
U2 have been making headlines with their brand-new album, Songs Of Innocence, which they released in conjunction with Apple earlier this year to make it the biggest album release ever. And even if there was a bit of a backlash for the album's um, default inclusion in everyone's iTunes, their Scottish fans were still out in full force for their EMA performance.
The Glasgow EMA stage brought U2 closer to their Irish home turf, and maybe that's why things took an emotional turn in their performance. Back in 1997, U2 took home the EMA for best live performance and repeated the EMA win again in 2009, so it's no surprise that they looked so at home on the arena's stage.
Bono brought his signature emotive vocals to the performance, standing at the lip of the shadowy, smoky stage with the rest of the band interspersed behind him. Instead of using the space for dancing or "Elevation"-era camera angles, Bono and the boys -- with The Edge at the piano and a complete string section -- filled the stage and the arena with their stirring, somber performance of "Every Breaking Wave."
