Watch Roc Nation's Mayaeni Channel Detroit Soul In Her 'Black Jeans' Video

It's her first release since the Detroit native signed to Roc Nation.

Back in 2012, Roc Nation announced that Detroit's Mayaeni would be joining their ample roster of talent. Since then, the singer has been hard at work on her major label debut, and this week we got our first taste of what it will sound like.

Her first song and video dropped on Tuesday (November 4) and "Black Jeans" fuses gospel, soul and pop rhythms with Mayaeni's scratchy, velvet vocals to preach a message of love and self-confidence.

"'Black Jeans is a song about freedom," Mayaeni explained of the track. "Expressing who you are and not being afraid of it. It’s like saying, 'Go on with your bad self!'"

Fans of KT Tunstall, Solange or Haim will definitely be into her funky mix of R&B, pop and rock. In the video, her friends hurriedly throw up posters for her concert and graffiti hearts on abandoned tunnels around Detroit.

Plus, we need to see more women play electric guitar with this kind of fearlessness! That breakdown in the middle is definitely a groove you'll get into. Watch the video below:
