Apple Breaks Silence On The iPhone 6 'Bendgate' Backlash

Company reports only nine cases of bent deivces.

You're holding using the phone the wrong way.

No, seriously. Apple just released a statement about the alleged "Bendgate" scandal that's been rocking the iPhone 6 Plus world for the last several days, and also knocking Apple's stock down a few pegs.

If you haven't heard, a handful of iPhone 6 Plus users have been posting photos that show a crease in the aluminum body of their brand-new devices, allegedly from storing the phone in the front pocket of their pants for extended periods of time. Lewis Hilsenteger of Unbox Theory took the test a step further by bending an iPhone under the force of his bare hands.

So what exactly did the Big A have to say about this debacle? It wasn't far off from Steve Jobs' sentiment over the iPhone 4's antenna-gate.

"With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare," Apple said. They went on to note that only nine customers have directly reported the bending issue, and went as far as to describe the rigorous testing the device was put through before market.

Read the full statement from Apple below:

Our iPhones are designed, engineered and manufactured to be both beautiful and sturdy. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature a precision engineered unibody enclosure constructed from machining a custom grade of 6000 series anodized aluminum, which is tempered for extra strength. They also feature stainless steel and titanium inserts to reinforce high stress locations and use the strongest glass in the smartphone industry. We chose these high-quality materials and construction very carefully for their strength and durability. We also perform rigorous tests throughout the entire development cycle including 3-point bending, pressure point cycling, sit, torsion, and user studies. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus meet or exceed all of our high quality standards to endure everyday, real life use.

With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus. As with any Apple product, if you have questions please contact Apple.

All in all, if you have a bent iPhone 6 Plus, you're using it the wrong way. Take it on down to the Genuis Bar, if you pass their Visual Mechanical Inspection, it might just be covered under warranty.
