It seriously pays to be a One Direction fan.
Directioner Anna Todd is about to be a pretty rich 25-year-old after she recently landed a six-figure advance for “After,” her steamy fan-fiction story about Harry Styles and the rest of the boys of One Direction.
The story, which will be reworked and published in November by Simon & Shuster imprint Gallery Books, follows a college freshman Tessa, whose life is turned upside down when she falls for a punk version of Styles. Todd, who wrote 300 short chapters spread across three volumes, was first published on the online community Wattpad and became an instant hit, gaining more than 800 million reads.
“It really started when I was on Instagram one day, and I saw these little mini stories people were writing about Harry Styles, which was crazy to me. Then one of the girls I had followed on Instagram put her story on Wattpad. I had no idea what that was, but I followed the link and it was this whole world of 1D fan fiction,” she told Sugarscape. “I started reading all kinds of it, and then decided that I wanted to give it a go myself. I didn’t think anything would come of it though – it was just for fun!”
And it seems that “After” may just get the Hollywood treatment. United Talent Agency is shopping the film’s rights, which would make it the latest fan fic to turn mainstream. The highly popular and much-anticipated flick “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which hits theaters in 2015, started out as fan fiction based on Bella and Edward from “Twilight.”
