Taylor Swift has had to cancel concerts in the past for any number of reasons, from bad weather to illness. But on Tuesday (May 27) she was forced to call off a sold-out gig in Bangkok, Thailand, for a most unexpected reason: a coup d'etat.
The country came under military rule last week following a government overthrow on Thursday and promoter BEC-Tero announced that the June 9 concert was canceled "due to recent events in Thailand," according to the Associated Press. Taylor, in the midst of an Asian leg of her never-ending "Red Tour," was bummed about missing her Thai debut.
I'm sending my love to the fans in Thailand. I'm so sad about the concert being canceled.— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) May 27, 2014
Guitar god Eric Clapton canceled a show in Bangkok scheduled for February for similar reasons.
