5 Moments From The 2014 Oscars You Need To Know

Big winners, powerful performances and one record-breaking selfie make up the best moments from this year's Academy Awards.

From moving speeches to major performances, show-stopping fashion and one red carpet trip, the 2014 Academy Awards was entertaining, albiet not that surprising. Ellen DeGeneres made us laugh, category favorites went home winners and Jennifer Lawrence continued to prove she is the most charming creature in the universe. Here are some highlights from last night's Oscars.

Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey Among Big Winners

The Oscars were, unsurprisingly, not that surprising this year. Almost every category favorite went home a winner, starting with Best Supporting Actor Jared Leto, who impressed with a touching dedication to his mother.

Fellow 'Dallas Buyers Club' star Matthew McConaughey won Best Actor while Best Actress went to Cate Blanchett for "Blue Jasmine" and Lupita Nyong'o gave the most impressive speech of the night for Best Supporting Actress. Her flick, "12 Years A Slave" took home the top honor of Best Picture. "Gravity" swept in technical categories while also nabbing Alfonso Cuaron Best Director. The only major shock? "The Wolf Of Wall Street," nominated for five awards, went home empty handed.

Ellen's Selfie Broke A World Record

Oscar host Ellen Degeneres had some hits and misses throughout the night. Her opening monologue had us (and Jennifer Lawrence!) cracking up but the rest of her bits tended to drag. (That pizza joke clocked in at about 13 minutes long.) Though it was drawn out, our favorite Ellen-ism of the night was when she asked to snap a selfie with Best Actress nominee Meryl Streep and 10 other stars decided to jump in. The tweet is currently sitting at 2.5 million RTs, the most of any ever.

Is Jennifer Lawrence Being Adorable?

As if there was any question, J. Law continued to prove she is the most earnestly charming human being on the planet when she tripped and fell at the Oscars last night. Two years in a row? That's right. Lawrence has officially started a tripping trend. The actress haden't been on the red carpet for more than two minutes before she stumbled on her red Dior gown and took a tumble. Keep going, girl. One small spill for J. Law, one giant "YAAAS GIRL" from every clumsy human ever.

Oscar Performances Wow With Wide Range

This year's Academy Awards were looking more like the Grammys with killer performances from hitmakers like Pharrell, Pink and Karen O.

Pharrell's rendition of his infectious hit "Happy" had Lupita Nyong'o up out of her seat. P!nk donned a ruby red gown for "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" in honor of "The Wizard Of Oz." Karen O was joined by Vampire Weekend lead singer Ezra Koenig for a beautifully breathy performance of "The Moon Song." U2 proved they can still rock and Idina Menzel -- or, as John Travolta likes to call her, Adele Nazeem -- gave everyone goosebumps with a powerful performance of the "Frozen" hit "Let It Go."

Lupita Nyong'o Is The Red Carpet Winner

The Best Supporting Actress winner proved her red carpet prowess yet again in a custom Prada gown whose color was inspired by the "Nairobi blue" of her childhood. Jennifer Lawrence was a tangerine dream in peplum Dior with a behind-the-back necklace. Presenter Emma Watson was the epitome of downtown chic in sparkling Vera Wang. Want a full recap?
