As the world of superhero movies gets more and more crowded, studios are under pressure to go bigger and better than the competition. Well, the day after Warner Bros. announced that Wonder Woman would join Batman and Superman in their next movie, "X-Men" director Bryan Singer revealed the title and the villain for the next film concurrently.

Even though "X-Men: Days of Future Past" is still almost six months away, its sequel, "X-Men: Apocalypse," will reportedly hit the big screen on May 27, 2016.

Fans of the comic books will no doubt recognize the significance of titling the follow-up "Apocalypse," which is also the name of one of the series' most powerful villains. Initially introduced in the July 1986 issue of "X-Factor," Apocalypse was the world's first mutant and during who, the famous "Age of Apocalypse" story line, conquered much of the world.

The introduction of Apocalypse in the next "X-Men" movie may not come as a complete surprise to fans who have been paying close attention, as two keys players from the story line, Bishop and Blink, will appear in "Days of Future Past."

In "Age of Apocalypse," the son of Professor Xavier travels back in time to when his father and Magneto were allies to assassinate the metal-manipulating mutant. When Xavier dies by mistake, the immortal Apocalypse seizes the opportunity to enact his plan for world domination, which is based on the premise that mutants are the superior beings on Earth.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" will follow Wolverine on a similar time-traveling journey to stop a futuristic war that risks to end the world forever.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" opens in theaters on May 23, 2014.
