Scare Are They Now? Checking In On Our Favorite Horror Series

We've got the latest updates on some developing entries to the best loved spooky franchises.

You may have noticed, but 2013 has been decidedly light on horror movies, especially from the big series, but since today is Halloween, it got us wondering what some of our favorite frightening franchises are up to.

While some of the more iconic serial killers are peacefully sleeping for now, there has been a lot of movement on some dormant properties and some we'll be seeing in the very near future.

"Paranormal Activity"

Last Time We Saw It: "Paranormal Activity 4" opened in theaters on October 19, 2012.

Next Time We'll See It: 2013 will go down in history as the year without "Paranormal Activity." After ruling Halloween for four years in a row, the found-footage series took the year off, but next year, it will return with a vengeance. A Latino-themed spin-off, "The Marked Ones," debuts in January and an official follow-up, "Paranormal Activity 5," returns with a Halloween-appropriate October 24 release date.

"Resident Evil 6"

Last Time We Saw It: The fifth entry in the video game adaptation series, "Retribution," opened in September of last year.

Next Time We'll See It: Milla Jovovich will be back as the ever-returning Alice for a yet-untitled sixth "Resident Evil" movie. Following the series' pattern of two or three years between each installment, #6 will come to life in September 2014. So far Jovovich and her writer-director husband Paul W.S. Anderson are the only confirmed entities involved.

"Friday the 13th"

Last Time We Saw It: "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" remake director Marcus Nispel helmed a reboot of Jason Voorhees in 2009. That film grossed over $90 million worldwide.

Next Time We'll See It: While there's nothing officially on the books, Ryan Turek from Shock Till You Drop tweeted last month that he heard that the series' producers were fielding pitches for a found-footage take on Jason Voorhees. That was the last update we heard, so if we do see Crystal Lake's most famous resident back any time soon, don't be surprised if he's chasing the cameraman.

"Scream"

Last Time We Saw It: Wes Craven brought the Woodsboro gang back together for "Scream 4" in 2011 with some younger additions... who all died by the end.

Next Time We'll See It: Harvey Weinstein, brother of Bob, the head of Dimension Films, recently said that he wants the series back for one final installment. "Everyone lived in 'Scream 4,'" he said. "I'm begging him to do the movie and just end it. We've milked that cow."

"Evil Dead"

Last Time We Saw It: Sam Raimi's cult favorite got the reboot retreatment last year, but we haven't seen a proper Ash movie since 1992.

Next Time We'll See It: Recent updates from the reboot team, director Fede Alvarez and writer Rodo Sayagues, make a follow-up very unlikely, but there may be movement on an "Army of Darkness" sequel. Alvarez suggested on Twitter that Raimi is in position to helm the follow-up.
