Jason Derulo's 'Tattoos' Puts His 'Near-Death Experience' In Ink

'My whole world kind of flip-flopped,' Derülo tells MTV News of recording new album after fracturing his neck.

After Jason Derülo narrowly avoiding being paralyzed after [article id="1676846"]fracturing his neck[/article] during tour rehearsal, many thought his career would suffer a major setback.

Fast-forward 17 months and Derülo is hotter than ever. His single "The Other Side" was a staple on radio stations all summer long, the track "Talk Dirty" featuring 2 Chainz is #1 on the U.K. singles chart and on Tuesday (September 24) he released his third album, Tattoos.

"Tattoos, that album, it's because things have really changed around me, I mean my whole world kind of flip-flopped," Derülo told MTV News at the [article id="1714419"]iHeartRadio Music Festival[/article]. "I went through a near-death experience and that opened my eyes to a lot of new things, falling in love, and also just seeing life in a different light, being able to spend more time with my family and writing about all those different things."

Derülo goes on to describe Tattoos as an "eclectic" album that can be listened to in the car, club or bedroom. On Monday Derülo gave fans an intimate peek into his bedroom behavior when he released the sexy video for "Marry Me," alongside his longtime girlfriend, Jordin Sparks.

"Jordin and I are obviously very close, and the song 'Marry Me' brings up a lot of questions, of course," Derülo said. "But when that moment is right, it's going to be one of the greatest moments of my life when I do get down on one knee and make the decision to do that. I swear that I'll mean it when I say, 'Will you marry me?' "

Sparks doesn't just appear in the music video: She, along with Pitbull, the Game and 2 Chainz, is also on the album. Sparks appears on one of [article id="1698079"]Derülo's favorite tracks, "Vertigo."[/article]

"It's a duet between Jordin and I, and it's stripped down -- it's an acoustic track with just the piano and us," Derülo said. "So there's no bells and no whistles, just our voices, the lyrics and the actual love that's on the track."
