Jay-Z's Inaugural Barclays Show To Wrap Up 'Happy' Week In Brooklyn

From the ribbon-cutting to 40/40's grand opening, MTV News was there to witness the lead-up to Jay's big night.

In just a few more hours, Jay-Z will be officially opening the doors to Brooklyn's Barclays Center and 19,000 fans will file in to watch Hov's homecoming. MTV News will be on hand for the historic concert, just as we have been all week since the ceremonious ribbon-cutting on September 21.

The $1 billion Barclays broke ground back in 2010, but during the past week the brass at the new arena have kicked things into overdrive, hosting special events which all lead up to Friday night's (September 28) concert. Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov and Barclays officials officially unveiled Brooklyn's new arena on September 21, setting off a week of special events that is capped off by Jay's September 28 show.

Adidas Brooklyn Nets Merchandise Shop Opens

On September 24, Nets stars Brook Lopez and MarShon Brooks welcomed Nets fans to the brand new Adidas merchandise shop and even signed autographs. "Our guys, Adidas, Jay-Z, we've made some beautiful stuff here," Lopez told MTV News of the different apparel and sporting goods at the shop. "Most importantly we're going to be a team that Brooklyn can really embrace and want to support."

Jay-Z Promises a Brooklyn Celebration With First Barclays Show

While Hov was out celebrating the release of "NBA 2K13" on September 26, the new basketball video game that he executive produced, he stopped and spoke to MTV News about what fans should expect at his inaugural Barclays concert. "I really hope it's just a celebration," Jay-Z said. "Pretty much all the concerts are loud and sing-a-longs, but I hope that this is a special thing. It's pretty much a celebration of having a team in Brooklyn — you know, again, everybody knows we hadn't had a team since the Dodgers, so it's really a happy time in Brooklyn."

On September 27, just 24 hours before he takes the stage at Brooklyn's new arena, Jay-Z celebrated the grand opening of his new 40/40 Club inside of the Barclays. "A guy stopped me in the hallway and said, 'Man this is a great thing for New York City.' And that's what the whole thing was about," he said.
