One Direction mania is here! Parents, hide your daughters, as the five members of the U.K. boy band have stormed U.S. shores and been wholeheartedly embraced by American teens.
The guys took over Rockefeller Plaza in New York on Monday morning (March 12) for their first appearance on the “Today” show. They kicked off their performance with the single “What Makes You Beautiful” followed by “One Thing” and “More Than This.”
“They’re very, very loud,” group member Zayn Malik said when asked what they like most about American girls.
The group met when they were competing on the British version of “The X Factor” in 2010, and Simon Cowell thought about putting the five guys together and forming a boy band. “I think obviously, you know, for me, since we got put together, we made four best friends,” Malik said. “For us, that’s the most amazing part. The only downside is we don’t see our friends and family as much as we’d like to.”
While they originally set out to make it as solo artists, group member Harry Styles admitted that agreeing to perform as a group has “proven that was the best thing for all of us.”
With their album Up All Night set to drop on Tuesday here in the U.S., the guys says they are just focused on the present. “We don’t really have a plan,” Louis Tomlinson said. “We’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing and see what happens.”
One Direction are also set to return to 30 Rock on April 7 when they will appear on “Saturday Night Live” as the night’s musical guest. “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara will host.
And it seems that not only do teen girls have One Direction mania, so does Justin Bieber. His manager, Scooter Braun, teased a possible collaboration. “Very possible,” he tweeted. “He likes them and thinks they are good dudes.”
