While Lady Gaga’s “Judas” video leaked on Thursday afternoon (May 5), the clip got its official premiere on E! later that night. Gaga sat down with E! News to chat about the funky, pop-culture-influenced clip revolving around a love triangle between Mary Magdalene (Gaga), Judas (Norman Reedus) and Jesus (Rick Gonzalez ).
Fashion, longing and betrayal rule in the video, directed by Lady Gaga and her creative director, Laurieann Gibson. (The version that appeared on E! was billed as “uncut,” but it didn’t differ from the leaked version.)
As is expected with anything Gaga does, the video will have people talking. But, Gaga notes, the video isn’t meant to cause controversy.
“In my opinion, the only controversial thing about this video is that I’m wearing Christian Lacroix and Chanel in the same frame,” she joked, adding, “This video is not meant to be an attack on religion. I respect and love everyone’s beliefs. I’m a religious and spiritual person who’s obsessed with religious art. I’m obsessed with it.
“I believe I was put on this earth to cause a ruckus,” she continued. “At the beginning, when I came out with ’Just Dance,’ I couldn’t get an interview. … I couldn’t get on the radio. I just want to keep making stuff that’s great and thought-provoking.”
So what does Gaga think of the video? “Honestly, it came out more incredible than I thought it would. It’s so beautiful. It’s like a fresco come to life. We went on set and we just shot the sh– out of it.”
