‘Megamind’ Conquers Weekend Box Office

Animated superhero flick, starring Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt, lands in theaters with $47.6 million.

The superhero romp “Megamind” won over audiences with a mega-huge weekend debut. Featuring a slew of funny and famous voices, including Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt, the latest animated creation from Dreamworks snagged the top spot, with $47.6 million in ticket sales.

Coming in behind the supervillain-helmed comedy was “Due Date,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis. The latest from “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips, which follows a mismatched pair’s antic-packed, cross-country road trip to deliver Downey’s character in time to catch his child’s birth, netted $33.5 million.

Also debuting in the top five was the star-studded drama “For Colored Girls.” Tyler Perry’s onscreen re-imagining of the groundbreaking Ntozake Shange stage production “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf” placed third. Starring a range of accomplished actresses, including Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine, Janet Jackson, Tessa Thompson and Whoopi Goldberg, who take on the powerful monologues of Shange’s original work, the film picked up $20.1 million.

The mature mercenaries of “Red” continued to hold down a top-five spot. Boasting sharp performances from screen veterans Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich, the film’s $8.9 million take bumped its total to about $72 million.

The fright flick “Saw 3D” rounded out the top five. The latest movie in the horror series was just behind “Red” with $8.2 million. The weekend haul pushes the film’s overall tally to around $39 million.
