Jordin Sparks Heads To Broadway For 'In The Heights'

'American Idol' winner will star in the musical for 12 weeks starting August 19.

[artist id="2807016"]Jordin Sparks[/artist] is about to become the latest "American Idol" alum to head to the Great White Way. The 2007 "Idol" winner will make her Broadway debut on August 19, when she joins the cast of the Tony- and Grammy-winning musical [article id="1630443"]"In the Heights"[/article] in the lead role of Nina Rosario.

Sparks is slated to play a 12-week limited engagement with the show through November 14. "It's always been one of my dreams to perform on Broadway," the singer said in a statement. "This is a brand new experience for me. I look so forward to spending time in New York City and joining this talented cast and my favorite new musical."

Sparks, 20, will be taking on the role of Rosario, the proud daughter of a Dominican family living in New York's Washington Heights who gains neighborhood admiration when she becomes the first in her family to attend college. She will be replacing Janet Dacal in the musical, which currently also stars Corbin Bleu of "High School Musical."

Last July, [article id="1617053"]Sparks released her sophomore album, Battlefield,[/article] which spawned a hit title song and the dance single "S.O.S. (Let the Music Play)." She is in the midst of her first-ever headlining tour, a 44-date outing that kicked off on May 1 and is currently slated to run through August 8, finishing up at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, Wisconsin.

Last week, Sparks joined U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood to announce a new anti-texting campaign, "X the TXT," aimed at deterring Americans from texting while driving.
