'Iron Man 2' Tops International Box Office With $100.2 Million

Robert Downey Jr.'s superhero sequel opened overseas a week before its U.S. debut.

Tony Stark is used to having an overabundance of wealth, and that life of luxury isn't likely to change thanks to the highly profitable international debut for director Jon Favreau's "Iron Man 2." The Marvel Studios superhero movie premiered in foreign markets last Thursday and amassed a total of $100.2 million in just five days.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson, "Iron Man 2" debuted in 6,764 locations for a per-screen average of $14,814. The film earned $2.25 million on 48 IMAX screens for a $47,000 per-screen average. Additionally, "Iron Man 2" opened in first place in all but one of 53 foreign markets, missing the mark only in Colombia. Its greatest performance was in the United Kingdom with a $12.2 million haul from 528 locations, with similarly strong showings including $10.8 million earned in South Korea, $8.8 million in France, $8.2 million in Russia and $7.3 million in Mexico.

"Iron Man 2" distributor Paramount Pictures reports that the comic book adaptation's international debut beat the first film's opening by an average of 26 percent in local currencies. In 2008, "Iron Man" premiered to an initial foreign gross of $99.1 million.

Paramount released "Iron Man 2" in foreign territories a week earlier than its May 7 U.S. release date in order to secure an extra week of business in advance of the 2010 World Cup, which launches on June 11 and promises to draw away the all-important male demographic -- key for the success of "Iron Man 2."

Given the film's foreign performance and its status as the only new release to arrive in theaters this coming weekend, the domestic business for "Iron Man 2" is likely to achieve similarly super-heroic numbers.
