Christopher Nolan Says 'Inception' Has 'No Limits'

'We're making a film that is a grand-scale action film,' he says of secretive project.

Since word of Christopher Nolan's thriller "Inception" dropped in February 2009, the director has largely succeeded in shrouding his film in mystery.

Every time we chatted with one of the stars -- from Leonardo DiCaprio to Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Marion Cotillard to Cillian Murphy -- each actor has barely let an "Inception" detail slip. Even [article id="1619465"]the teaser trailer[/article] raised far more questions than it answered.

Now, as the film's July release date approaches, Nolan has begun to shed some light on the story line. Not much, mind you, but when it comes to one of the year's most anticipated films, we'll take what we can get.

"I think it's really a balance between creating intrigue about the movie, getting people excited to see something original, something different that they don't know what they're going to get," Nolan explained. "We have to start giving people a little bit of information, a little bit about what 'Inception' is."

What it is has variously been described as a thriller about the architecture of the brain and the love child of Nolan's "Memento" and "Batman" films. Both those assessments seem fine by the director.

"We're making a film that is a grand-scale action film," Nolan said. " 'Inception' is about the world of dreams and the interior of the human mind. It's about a guy played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who has a team of people who have access to a technology that allows them to enter people's minds through their dreams. That allowed us to craft a film with no limits, a film that could take you anywhere and raise all different kinds of action scenarios, different realities, really play with the fabric of what constitutes a grand-scale summer movie.

"We certainly tried to fuse some of the more intimate things I find fascinating about human beings and about human interaction and character with the grand-scale filmmaking we were doing on 'The Dark Knight' and 'Batman Begins,' " he added.
