'God Of War 3' Director Gives Us An Inside Look

Stig Asmussen reveals his favorite moments and what's next for Kratos.

No PS3 title has been more anticipated than [article id="1633944"]"God of War 3."[/article] The popular franchise has left an indelible mark on the gaming world with impressive graphics, engaging story lines and ferocious action. Tuesday (March 16) marks the release of the latest installment, so we thought we'd sit down with the game's director, Stig Asmussen, to get an inside look at some of his favorite moments and what the future holds for Kratos.

The most impressive aspect of "God of War 3" is its use of scale. Thanks to the increased power of the PS3, the developers were able to pull off some truly massive boss fights and action scenes. Asmussen mentioned a few scenes that really exemplify this scale, including one that takes place in the very first level. "We always try to do a big opening," he said. "I think this time, it's the one we can really hang our hat on as being the most epic one that we've done yet. It's this huge battle between the gods and the titans, and Kratos is smack dab in the middle of it, on top of a Titan that's 1,600 feet tall."

But it's not just about having giant monsters battling against each other. It's important that the player feels like an unstoppable force, despite being much smaller than any of the foes he faces. "Once you pick up the controller, it gives you a sense of power that you don't find in most games," Asmussen explained. He went on to describe how some of that manifests in the game. "We build up a boss as something that nothing can possibly take down, but then, when you do, you feel like the most powerful guy in the world."

Action is certainly a hallmark of the "God of War" series, but there has always been a strong story as well. It was important to the development team that the trilogy ends with a new level of complexity, and Asmussen felt like they accomplished that.

"I thought it was high time in the series that we got to know Kratos a little better, get under the surface a bit more. We didn't want to overdo it or anything. We were dealing with a pretty risky theme with this, and I knew it was risky. I felt really strongly about it, and I thought it was an important message to get out there."

So have we seen the end of Kratos? Probably not, but Asmussen said the main story, Kratos' quest for vengeance, is done, and a new setting will be needed for future games. "Greek mythology is finished," he said. "We're closing the book on the mythology. Kratos has obliterated Greek mythology, so it just becomes a myth. I don't know what's next. I have no clue. But I wanted to make sure that we had some tools in there that we could kind of resurrect the story and take it some other places." A murderous journey through the Old Testament, perhaps?
