Green Day 'So Excited' About VMA Noms

'Even though we have eight VMA awards on our mantle, there's always room for more,' Billie Joe Armstrong says.

You would think award show nominations would be old hat for the guys in [artist id="988"]Green Day[/artist]. After all, they've been doing this for a while now. They've won Grammys, BRITs, Junos and, if their upcoming [article id="1608061"]stage version of "American Idiot"[/article] is successful, maybe they'll be adding a Tony or two to the collection.

But nowhere have Green Day taken home more hardware than at the MTV Video Music Awards: In 2005, at the height of American Idiot mania, they won seven Moonmen, including Video of the Year, Best Group Video and Best Rock Video for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."

So, when [article id="1617536"]nominations for the 2009 VMAs[/article] were announced on Tuesday, it wasn't exactly a surprise to see Green Day's name on the list (their "21 Guns" clip received three nods, for Best Rock Video, Best Direction and Best Cinematography). But to Billie Joe Armstrong and Co., the news is still a very big deal.

"We are so excited to be nominated this year for '21 Guns,' " Armstrong said in a statement to MTV News. "Even though we have eight VMA awards on our mantle, there's always room for more. This video we did with Marc Webb is really special. We're really proud of it."

"21 Guns" faces some stiff competition in the Best Rock Video category: It's up against Coldplay's "Viva La Vida," the Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody," Paramore's "Decode" and Fall Out Boy's "I Don't Care." But, ultimately, you will decide who takes home the Moonman.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will take place September 13 at 9 p.m. ET. Nominees, celebrity presenters and additional performers will be announced in the coming weeks. To be the first to find out the inside scoop, follow the Inside MTV Twitter account at Twitter.com/InsideMTV.
